CHIC DNA Banking Clinic . . . The NCA will again be offering a DNA banking clinic, located in the grooming tent (at the 2012 National Specialty Show in Carlisle Pa., April 30 thru May 5), where you can have your Newf ’s blood drawn for storage in the Canine Health Information Center’s DNA repository. The DNA is stored for future health-related research studies.
All Newfs should participate, whether pet or breeding dogs, healthy or affected with a genetic or other disorder. Unregistered dogs, rescues, and puppies not yet registered can participate as well. We need 10cc of blood from each dog, a health survey, and registration information filled out by the owners. Blood is drawn by experienced veterinarians or veterinary technicians, and the fur is not clipped or shaved.
The OFA has graciously offered to underwrite $10 of the cost while the NCA Charitable Trust Management Board will underwrite the additional $10 through the Newfoundland Health Challenge. Thus the cost is zero for all Newfoundland DNA drawn at this year’s National. Thank you to the OFA and CTMB for this DNA banking opportunity.
Health surveys can be printed from the CHIC website
(www.caninehealthinfo.org)
in advance and submitted at the time the dog’s blood is drawn. If there are confidentiality concerns, the health survey can be filled out and mailed by the owner directly to CHIC. Paperwork is checked only for completeness at the clinic. All information provided will be kept confidential.
The DNA Clinic will be available Wednesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Appointments are not necessary, walk-ins are welcome, and “house calls” to your set-up for a large number of dogs can be arranged. It is, however, helpful to let us know when you are
likely to have the dog’s blood drawn.

page 32 of the National Specialty Form.
